As you set up your website, now has come the time for you to start writing articles.

You may be thinking that you are not a writer. The good news is that you don’t have to be a writer to write a good article.

Know that your writing style will take some time to develop.

Your articles will get better as you write them.

If you are still unsure about your writing skills, let me tell you about a successful businessman who failed English and is now one of the best copywriters out there.

You may know him if you have been in the make money online world for a while. He is everywhere!

If you know him, you know I’m talking about Anik Singal, the founder of Lurn.

This is his story.

He was a good student in school until he chose an optional class where he had to write an essay about a book. He didn’t read the book. He watched the movie the night before his paper was due. He got a D-.

He didn’t understand and thought his paper was good. He went to see the teacher and told her that his grade was wrong.

She looked at the paper and told him: You are right, I’ve made a mistake. You should have gotten an F.

She then told him to do everyone a favour and never write as a living.

But there he is, years later writing copy for a living.

This is the story he tells during his copywriting webinar or during his free challenges. Is it true? Who knows.

But if you really wonder if it’s possible to improve your writing skills as you go, I invite you to read some of my first blog posts.

My writing style did evolve and now that I some copywriting skills, I feel more confident when writing about something.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

When you are just getting started writing, it doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like your article is perfect. It’s not what matters the most.

The important thing is to get the information you want to share out there.

You can always make some tweaks later on.

If you want to write in English and it’s not your first language, you can always use Google Docs to help you correct most spelling and grammar mistakes.

Even if you don’t have to be perfect, you still want to avoid mistakes as much as possible. It will help you have a professional look.

Do Your Research

You want to write about things people are looking for. I know it’s tempting to write about things you want to write about but if nobody is looking for that, know that your article is not going to bring a lot of traffic to your website.

You have to get in the head of your audience.

What do they need to know? What is their problem?

The easy way to do that is to search some keywords on Google and see what comes out in the suggestions as you type.

Take a sneak peak at the first organic results. See if they really answer the question or if they missed some important points.

This will help you determine the angle or the approach you want to take with your article.

It will also help you properly answer the question your audience has.

Keep in Mind Your Audience

If you are talking to beginners, make sure you explain everything in detail so everyone can understand.

If you bring a new concept, explain it. How many times have you read articles that are meant to be for beginners but in the end, you didn’t understand much because there was too much jargon?

Keep it as simple as possible. If there are concepts that need to be explained in detail, write articles about them and then link to them in all your articles.

Be a beginner again. That will help you write helpful articles.

The same applies to helping more advanced users. If you are too basic in your explanation and not providing real answers to what they need, you won’t perform well.

That’s why it’s important to know exactly who your audience is and what they need to solve their problems.

Who is your audience?

Of course, even if you talk to senior dog owners, it doesn’t mean that a 20 years old dos owner won’t find your content relevant.

Maybe your audience is parents teaching their kids to take care of their dogs.

But knowing who you talk to will influence the way you write.

I wrote an article to help you determine your avatar (ideal future client). You can read it here.

Give Examples

When you explain something that can be explained easily with examples, use them!

You can take a look at my article on Funnels. I used examples to explain the concept so people really understand what it is.

Even in this articles, I had examples. First with the story and then inviting you to read some of my first articles to see the difference.

Examples create a mental image of what you are telling your audience. It gets easier to understand and to remember.

Ok so here is an example of a question I asked Google: Best running shoes for kids.

And the results I got are not what I want as a review. There is too much important information missing. I want to buy the best shoes for my kids.

What I need to know is: Are the shoes durable? Are they confortables? Are they easy to put on? Do they stay attached? Do they get loose? Do they stink if my kids wear them everyday? How do we clean them? Etc. But instead, we get things like that:

So the intent is good, but there is too much missing.

Even the second website isn’t what I want. It gives some other information, but it is so incomplete.

So if anyone wants to build a website with shoes for kids with detailed information on each (use your kids friends and shoes so you don’t have to buy everything) you are going to nail this!

Plus, the reason why they review so many pairs of shoes is that they want to have more word count for their article…

Be Original

The pictures used in the example articles are stock photos.

How do I know some kids actually tried them? I don’t.

Being original doesn’t mean that you have to come up with new information.

It means that you have to present it in a different way.

Remember that I told you to do your research? Well, testing the product or the services you promote is part of being original.

Most people tend to write good reviews and read some customers reviews and create their article without really putting the effort in.

So to be original is to stand out of what has already been done.

Keep in mind that AI (artificial intelligence or robots) are not able to write copy. Some companies even have AI write articles.

Income School made a video about that:

So if AI have access to all the information on the internet, they can create reviews articles that will contain more information on the products.

But what AI can’t do is try the products. I mean, it probably could go through a digital course on the internet, but it surely can’t put a roof rack on the top of your car.

Including personal experience in your articles is a good way to connect with your audience and make yourself relatable.

Model From Others

There are probably a few websites that are successful in your niche. I mean, they appear on the first page in the search results.

Go on their website and see if you enjoy the type of content they are creating, the way it looks, etc.

If you don’t, well then you create something that will be more pleasant.

If you do, you can model how they do things.

Take the time to analyze how their articles are made. What are the key parts. What images they use. Do they have graphics?

Take notes on everything: the article length, the keywords they use (and how often they appear in the article) where they put the images, the jargon they use, the visual flow ( headings, paragraph length, bolding, …) etc.

This will help you create articles that will be useful for your audience.

If you are in a niche where you feel like the top results aren’t as good as what they should be, you have the chance to create something better.

Then you model examples from another niche that could be somewhat related to yours.

For example, if you are creating a blog talking about violin and you can’t find anything good enough, you can take a peek at guitars websites and search the same kind of questions people would ask and see what comes up.

There is always a way to find good models.

It will make it easier for you to get started on the right foot.

In Conclusion

Don’t expect to be perfect on your first attempt. The key is to keep writing and creating content packed with useful information.

That way, even if the way you deliver the information is not optimal, the user (the reader) experience will still be good.

Now, do your research, keep your audience in mind, give examples when needed, model from successful bloggers and be original!

Answer the search query. People are looking for a specific answer when they ask a specific question in the search engine (Google, Bing, etc).

That’s how you can start creating good content.

Let the inspiration come!

What are you going to write about?

Let’s Get Started!
